I'll start.
Glancing over the board today, I can see just by some of the subject titles that the need for reasonably good grammar has apparently been thrown out the window.
I, for one, mourn its passing.

I was wondering how to start something like this. I now cringe before this page even opens because I know when It finally loads completely I will have to suffer through all the immature spelling of simple words like You, for, I don't Know...and other butchered things and thoughts. I think that and the constant childish antics are making this board more and more my least favorite to visit.

Yeah I'll third that... I know I ain't exactly fantastic with grammer and spelling, and I am guilty of the odd abbreviation and 'text talk', but I try to type in proper English when possible.
On the message board that my boyfriend goes on they have a rule that states everyone must use proper English and not shorten words, use abbreviations etc. Anyone who doesn't do so gets shot down in flames! But then I think some people on here don't even know what proper English is! |

What bothers me are unknown unregistered users posting and not putting OT at their topics. And if you notice, most unregistered users don't know how to spell.

Re: OT ~ Rant here | ||

Well, with the exception of you and several others, it's not just the unregistered memebers....I really think it has to do with the age of the posters and that's not a put down. Most people under a certian age have been on the computer and IM'ing so long that it is second nature to them and as far as writing, it is first language. That doesn't make it right and it certianly doesn't make them look smart.
I think it irritates me more when this is pointed out and politely asked not to use so much of that kind of writing, the poster will always say, I just didn't want to take the time to spell out the words........so in other words they are telling me at least that they are lazy and other people's opinions do not make a bit of difference to them. Spoiled I say. dev (looking for cover to duck under) |

I dont' expect perfect, proper english all the time. I'm certainly not perfect about it all the time. I don't mind casual dialog. I don't even mind a bit of IM "speak" but when I come on a board and it's gone as far as it has here, I just have to wonder why nothing's been said about it. I know there are posters of all ages here, but come on. A five year old has enough of a grasp of the language to do better than what's going on now.

Case in point:
This caption would have been cute if it had been in english. ![]() I can deal with wanna. But "dat"...? Please. |

Re: OT ~ Rant here | ||

It annoys me when people say writing in IM talk is "a habit" or if they "couldn't be bothered" to write properly, because that will work against them, and they'll find themselves writing '2', 'dat/da' etc in essays and other important literary works.
Writing in proper English is a good habit to have, as it means you don't have to think about it when you have to write essays etc. |

AMEN TO THAT! One of my pet peeves is when people don't even bother using good grammar. Or bother to spell for that matter.
and I agree, this writing in IM speak is getting to be a bit much. It doesn't take any longer to spell out "that" than it does "dat". |

Yes, I agree with everyone hear. I am probably the last person to talk because I most definitely dont have the best grammar and such but at least I try to speak English.
Quote: I know what you mean Leanne. My sister is really bad for the IM talk, not long ago she handed me an essay of hers to read and see what I thought, allot of the words in their was IM talk it made her look silly and when I brought it to her attention she didnt even realize. She made it such a habit that it was second nature to her. |

I have to agree with both points so far, it makes the board that much less of a good thing. It drives me crazy to try and decipher some of the posts that I come across, and please, don't anyone tell me to stay away from those posts because they're all over the place.
Thanks for bringing this up. Alice |

Thank you LEPPLADY. You have voiced what I have been thinking for a long while now. DEVISUN, I too cringe at the way the younger generation speaks and writes now a days. I can understand when there are typing errors. Those are usually pretty obvious. Don't schools teach the difference between here and hear; their, there an they're; two, to and too; etc? What about I before E except after C? Is this no longer taught?
Punctuation is also lacking. I don't post often, mainly because I don't know if I will be able to understand the responses! |

Re: OT ~ Rant here | ||

Okay, I understand everyone's point here, but I am hesitant to let this thread continue. Let me explain.
Yes, there are younger people on here who are used to IM language that can be annoying to others. However, there is not much we can do to stop this without turning into Nazi moderators. There are certain things that are acceptable to regulate in regards to language (such as swear words), but if we start saying, "You must use proper English, punctuation, capitalization, spelling..." then that becomes childish within itself. If this turns into such a prominent issue that we can no longer understand the majority of the posts on this board, we will step in and politely intervene. Until then, I recommend we all take this as light-heartedly as possible. Not every board will be perfect, but Jess and I try our hardest to keep things going here. There are some problem users, troll attacks, petty arguments, etc., but unfortunately we are not goddesses and have no magical powers to prevent these facts of life. We can only strive to contain them to a reasonable degree. I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread. Some of you mentioned that there are childish arguments happening on the board, but this does not seem far from that. Perhaps asking users directly to type out words would be more suitable and polite than a rant thread. Thanks guys! |

RE: OT~ Rant here | ||

I was told by a teacher that people tend to write how they talk, which has proved true in my case.
Yes, IM-speak can be annoying and bad grammer bugs me too, but in some cases IM can be ok, like : ppl for people, which I use alot. But what I CAN NOT stand is ppl ( Ugh, that drives me bonkers!!! |

Re: RE: OT~ Rant here | ||

I don't mean for a moment that people should be moderated for bad grammar, or be punished for spelling errors. We all slip up and we all make mistakes.
What I'm talking about is when it becomes so prevalent that it's hard to understand what people are saying. And when it's metioned to someone who's doing it to an extreme level, they giggle and say "That's just how I type" like it's supposed to be cute or something. I don't mean that anything should be done about it administratively, but it does get frustrating for some of us that may be older. And all of us who might be used to reading and writing in (at least semi-) proper english. It just gets frustrating, that's all. All I intended this thread for is to vent a bit of frustration at it. NOT to start bashing people for it or start any flames. If that starts to happen, then of course this thread needs to be locked down. Otherwise, all we want to do is let off some steam about it. That's all. It's been bothering me for some time now. And from the look of it, I'm not the only one. |

Understood. Thanks for clearing that up.
And like I said, if this problem becomes such an issue that we can't understand the board anymore, Jess and I will step in and be the Loyal spellcheckers/grammar nerds. |

Re: RE: OT ~ Rant here | ||

Oy, I know exactly what you guys are talking about. I know I have a habit of misspelling words every now and again, usually because my fingers type faster than my brain works lol, but there is no excuse for some of the stuff I've seen on here .. one thing I'd like to know is how in the world people cAN tYpE lIkE tHiS without making them want to yank out their own eyeballs! I mean that took me a bit to type right and the people I know can type that way as fast as we can type normally ... it's just amazing.
But if you guys think this board is bad, you should see the Bad RPers community on Livejournal .. oh my Lord do they have some bad posts! It's kinda fun to laugh at what they post though, just because of the comments :P |

*new* rant! | ||
|
My rant today is:
I hate not being able to talk to people. I used to get picked on and was really shy and all that, but now I'm older and I wanna meet people. However, my checkered past has rendered me socially inept I'm better than I used to be though. Approaching people is a problem- if I see someone I know, I can't just say hi to them. I did that to two guys today and I feel horrible because they don't deserve that. They're really very nice...:sigh: I'm so frustrated and mad at myself. I SUCK!!! But admitting you have a problem is the first step, right? |
