Chapter 1 (An indescribable pain)
Why do people do it, I mean animals are here to give us love and comfort and people do this to them? It just baffles me why people can harm their animals like this. I have just started this job a week ago; I didn't think I would come across a case this severe. I had gotten a call that someone had tied a rope around a dog, tied it to the back of their car, and drove off with the dog dragging along behind. The first thing I did after receiving the call was puke my guts out because the image was so sickening. Now the miracle of the thing was that a police car had caught them and was able to stop them before the dog died.
I had arrived there as soon as I could, which was sooner than I had expected. The scene was actually just around the corner from a Hoarding (Hoarding is where someone has way too many animals to be healthy for the animals) case I had just dealt with, now this.
Those boys got a piece of my mind. I have been told before to watch my mouth, but I just couldn't this time, not with how they were laughing at the situation. I was yelling things like WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING THIS ISN'T FUNNY and HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE TORTURED LIKE THIS HUH? I raced off with the dog in my truck as fast as I could; I was not going to let this one die on me. Days like this just aren't fare, but it's because of my love of animals that I got into this job; because I believe in the universal saying that animals are people are too.
It was plain to see that I arrived at the veterinary clinic just in time, because the animal was bleeding uncontrollably. The vets were able to rush it in before I felt the overwhelming amount of tears escape my eyes. The good thing was that my shift had ended my work day of fourteen hours, which were starting to take its toll on me. I couldn't stomach the thought of dinner right now, so after I got home I changed into my pajamas, crawled into bed, and let the tears flow.
As the vision of my room succumbed to the vision of a dream, I saw the horrifying pictures that my studies had supplied, and started to wonder what had happened to those animals. I then had a vision of the poor creature I had saved earlier, he was dead. This thought sent shock through out my body causing me to wake up.
I walked into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, when I saw the glow of the TV alerting me to the fact that my best friend was awake, "Hey Kayla".
"Oh Hey there Millie. What are you doing up?"
"I had a difficult case today".
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Not right now. It's too early in the morning".
"Alright, whatever you say".
"So what are we watching?"
"Teletubies".
"Teletubies?"
"Yeah I find it stimulating".
"What ever you say". So I sat there and watched the mind numbing children's show as realized that it must be at least 5 o'clock in the morning, so I decided to go back to bed. I didn't have to go to work that day, but I just had to go back to make sure that he was still alive. I woke up two hours later, took a shower, got dressed, quickly blew my hair dry, and left I still wasn't hungry.
When I got there about thirty minuets later I made a bee line for the receptionist, "Can I speak to Doctor Wendell?"
"Doctor Wendell is busy with a patent right now; she'll be out in a bit".
"Ok thank you".
I sat down in the waiting room next to a guy who must be waiting for his animal. Anyway Doctor Wendell came into the waiting room holding a cat that in my opinion looked somewhat like a miniature tiger; only the poor little thing had a cast over his right front leg. I wonder what happened to it. Doctor Wendell handed the man his cat, not something you see every day some might call him gay, but in this line of business you know better, he just loves animals.
"Now come back in six weeks, and we will take that cast right off", She said as he walked to the receptionists counter. "Ah hello Millie what can I do for you?"
"I dropped a male English bulldog off here yesterday and I was just wondering how he was".
"Your furry friend is doing better then expected".
"Can I see him?"
"You sure can".
I walked back behind the metal double doors and found his cage almost instantly. The poor thing had a major laceration around his neck, two broken legs, and some bad cuts all along his sides and belly. I saw him open his eyes and that's when I felt it, this unimaginable need to stay with him. And so I stayed there all day doing some volunteer work it felt good helping out. I really got to know the people there, I swear if I wasn't an animal cop I'd be something in veterinary care, but I'd rather catch the bad guy. It was rapidly approaching 10 o'clock, so I decided to call it a night, and I left for the day.
